How to calibrate your clamp ammeter?

Clamp-on ammeter is a commonly used current measurement tool meter in the industry. It is generally used to measure large currents or used in occasions with certain measurement risks, especially for electrical maintenance operations. There are many types of clamp meters on the market, the common ones are:

DC mA clamp meter
Remote display clamp meter
Power clamp meter
Power quality clamp meter
Leakage current clamp meter
How to calibrate the clamp ammeter?
Generally, according to the measurement principle, a single-turn coil can be used for calibration with a current source. However, in actual work, this method has some limitations, such as:
The output range of the high-accuracy current source is about 20A, which is difficult to cover the measurement range of the clamp meter
The annual stability of a large current source with an output of thousands of amperes is not high, it cannot work stably for a long time, and it is difficult to maintain
Large-size single-turn coils have large inductance and require a larger current source driving ability
Therefore, the clamp meter calibration generally adopts the equivalent ampere-turn method to achieve large current calibration. The specific method is:
Calibrator output standard AC and DC current
The output of the calibrator is connected to the input of the calibration coil
The structure of the calibration coil allows the current of the standard to pass through the jaws of the calibrated meter in the same direction multiple times
What the clamp meter detects is the equivalent ampere-turn current = standard device current * number of coil turns
For clamp meters with a measuring range below 1000A, you can use the following calibration schemes
Use a calibrator to output a stable current signal source, Fluke 5522A/5502A/5080A can be used
Cooperate with calibration coil, equivalent to large current, Fluke 5500A/COIL 50 turns or Fluke 9100-200 10 turns/50 turns can be used
For clamp meters with a measuring range above 1000A, you can use the following calibration schemes
Use the calibrator to output a stable current signal source, you can choose the current amplifier Fluke 52120A and the multi-function source Fluke 5522A/5502A/5080A, or you can choose the Fluke 52120A and the multi-function source Fluke 5730A
Cooperate with the calibration coil, equivalent to a large current, can be used, Fluke 52120A/3kA or Fluke 52120A/6kA
Fluke provides a wealth of calibration solutions for clamp-on ammeters to guarantee your test and measurement accuracy. Fluke Calibration is committed to the field of test and measurement, providing high-precision calibration instruments and software for the fields of electricity, temperature, pressure, flow, and radio frequency.
