2-Alarm fire in Evanston junk yard, 8-31-14

On Sunday, Evanston issued a second alarm for a fire at North Shore Towing, where a large number of junk cars and tires were involved. Tim Olk was on the scene and captured several powerful images that highlight the intensity of the situation. "Due to all the grease, oil, and other fluids, everyone needs new gear, and the hose was left there," said one firefighter, emphasizing the dangerous conditions faced by the crew. The fire created a challenging environment, with thick smoke and flammable materials making it difficult for firefighters to control the blaze. Despite the heat and hazardous conditions, emergency responders worked tirelessly to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading. Tim Olk's photos show the scale of the incident, including stacks of burning vehicles, firefighters drenched in water, and the use of a towering ladder to reach high areas. One image captures a firefighter cooling off after a long shift, while another shows a team working under intense heat, covered in oil and grease. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks firefighters face daily, especially when dealing with complex fires involving multiple hazardous materials. Local residents were advised to stay clear of the area as crews continued their efforts to fully extinguish the flames.
