Barrington village & FPD may split

The *Daily Herald* recently published an article exploring the ongoing tensions between the Barrington & Countryside Fire Protection District and the Village of Barrington. The long-standing partnership, which has served the area for decades, is now under strain as both sides consider a potential split. During a joint special meeting held on Monday, representatives from both entities engaged in a heated discussion, highlighting a growing list of grievances. The Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District, which provides fire services to a vast area covering over 40 square miles, is seeking more flexibility in its operations. Currently, the district operates under a contract with the village, but officials feel constrained by the existing agreement. Barrington Countryside President Tom Rowan expressed frustration, stating, “We’re hamstrung. We can’t do what we need to do.” One of the main concerns is the need to replace an aging water tender—a large tanker that can transport and deploy water via a high-pressure cannon. The current unit is no longer functional, and the district is pushing for approval to purchase a new one. This is especially critical given the lack of fire hydrants in the area. However, Village officials argue that a smaller tender was approved three years ago, and they believe a larger unit isn't necessary. They also point to the district’s low number of fires and strong mutual-aid agreements with neighboring fire departments as reasons to avoid further spending. Both sides agreed that the next step should be for the fire district to submit a formal letter detailing its requests and justifications. While the current intergovernmental agreement doesn’t expire until the end of 2013, the fire district is eager for changes sooner rather than later. If their demands aren’t met, both parties are prepared to walk away from the relationship. For the fire district, this could mean either establishing its own department or seeking a different service provider. Village Trustee Robert Windon said, “We want to run a department the way we feel it should be run—efficiently and with the taxpayers’ best interests in mind. If you don’t like that, that’s fine. Let us know, and at the end of this contract, we’ll all go our separate ways.” The full article can be found [HERE](#).
