Excerpts from cbschicago.com:
Lawrence Matthews, a dedicated firefighter from Dolton, passed away doing what he loved—fighting fires. On Saturday afternoon, he collapsed while battling a blaze in neighboring Harvey. The 35-year-old was taken to Ingalls Memorial Hospital after going into cardiac arrest but never regained consciousness. He was officially pronounced dead at 3:15 p.m.
In a touching moment of respect, Chicago and suburban police officers and firefighters lined the route as an ambulance carried Matthews’ body to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. His loss has left a deep impact on the community, especially within the fire department where he had served since 2009.
Matthews, a father of four and a devoted husband, had always shown remarkable strength. Just two years after receiving a heart transplant at the University of Chicago Hospital, he was cleared by his doctors to pursue his dream of becoming a firefighter. His journey was nothing short of inspiring.
The fire that took his life occurred near 150th and Maplewood, where multiple mobile homes were destroyed. According to officials, Matthews was on the sidewalk when he suddenly went into cardiac arrest. His death is a heartbreaking reminder of the risks faced by first responders every day.

An autopsy was conducted on Sunday for Lawrence Matthews, a Dolton firefighter who died in the line of duty. However, the cause of his death remains under investigation, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Matthews, 35, of Glenwood, collapsed and suffered a cardiac arrest after fighting a fire at a mobile home in Harvey on Saturday. He was rushed to Ingalls Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
A heart transplant recipient, Matthews received a new heart in 2007 at the University of Chicago Hospital. After passing a rigorous physical exam, he was allowed to join the fire department in 2009. His story was one of resilience and determination.
The fire, which occurred near 150th Street and Rockwell Avenue, completely destroyed the mobile home. As the community mourns, many are remembering not just the tragedy, but also the life of a man who gave everything for others.
