Pembroke FPD brush truck destroyed in fire

Excerpts from DailyJournal.com:

Brush fires have long challenged the small Pembroke Township volunteer fire department, but an illegal burn over the weekend has left them without a critical piece of equipment.

The department’s brush truck became stuck and was destroyed as firefighters worked to prevent the fire from spreading to homes on South Dickerson Street and East Russell Drive. Fortunately, no one was injured, but the $20,000 vehicle is now totaled, leaving the department in a tough spot.

"We're already short on manpower, and now we've lost a truck," said Fire Chief Mark Baines. "It's really tough. Now we have to wait for help from Momence or St. Anne, and every second counts when you're fighting a fire."

Baines explained that his 12-member team handles about 100 brush fires annually. So far this year, they've responded to at least 15, including one that reached a resident’s pool fence. Last year, a similar fire destroyed a mobile home entirely.

"This is careless burning," Baines said. "People are illegally burning garbage and not paying attention. A lot of these fires are caused by repeat offenders. I don’t understand why someone wouldn’t pay $15 a month for proper waste collection."

Kankakee County law prohibits open burning of hazardous materials, as determined by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. Additionally, open burning is not allowed on windy days.

With their brush truck out of commission, Baines has a clear message for residents: "Don’t burn. Just don’t burn."

This letter comes from Brad Steinweg:

Hello,

While browsing Facebook last week, I came across some photos from the Pembroke Fire Protection District page. It seems like their brush truck got caught up in a recent brush fire. I don’t have all the details, but from what I’ve read so far, it sounds like the truck got stuck in the mud and the flames eventually caught up to it.
