Barrington village & FPD may split

The *Daily Herald* recently published an article exploring the evolving relationship between the Barrington & Countryside Fire Protection District and the Village of Barrington. The piece highlights growing tensions and a potential split between the two entities, which have maintained a long-standing partnership. During a joint special meeting held on Monday, representatives from both sides engaged in a heated discussion, revealing deep-seated frustrations. The Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District, which serves an area spanning over 40 square miles, is seeking greater flexibility in its contract with the village. They argue that current restrictions limit their ability to hire additional staff or invest in essential equipment without financial support from the village. Barrington Countryside President Tom Rowan expressed frustration, stating, “We’re basically hamstrung right now. We can’t do what we need to do.” A key point of contention is the district’s desire to purchase a new tender—a large water tank truck used for firefighting. Their current unit is outdated and being retired, but they believe it’s necessary due to the lack of fire hydrants in the area. However, village officials maintain that a smaller tender was approved three years ago, and they don’t see the need for a larger one, especially given the low number of fires and existing mutual-aid agreements with neighboring departments. Both sides agreed that the next step should be for the fire district to submit a formal letter detailing their requests and justifications. While the current intergovernmental agreement doesn’t expire until the end of 2013, fire district leaders are pushing for changes sooner. If their demands aren’t met, both parties seem ready to part ways. For the fire district, this could mean either forming its own department or seeking a new service provider. Village Trustee Robert Windon emphasized the importance of operating efficiently and in the best interest of taxpayers. “We want to run a department the way we feel it should be run: efficiently and thinking of the taxpayers,” he said. “If you guys don’t like that, that’s fine. Let us know, and at the end of this contract, we’ll all go our separate ways.” The article also notes that this isn’t the first time issues have arisen between the two governing bodies.
