CFD Apparatus History – Ward LaFrance trucks (1970)

Part 2 of the series on the CFD’s Ward LaFrance apparatus in Chicago focuses on the Grove aerials. Bill Friedrich shared the following details: There were a total of five WLF P80/Grove 100-foot rear-mount aerials ordered. These units were assigned to Truck 12 (E-183), Truck 34 (E-184), Truck 21 (E-185), Truck 18 (E-186), and Truck 7 (E-187). Each of these trucks was initially equipped with booster reels, though these were later removed from Truck 12 and Truck 18. The images below provide a glimpse into how these units looked over time. The first photo shows Truck 18 with its 1970 Ward LaFrance/Grove 100-foot rear-mount aerial. This unit was one of the original five and remained in service for many years. Another image features Truck 12, which had a similar setup but had its booster reel removed, as seen in the photo. Truck 7 is also shown with its aerial, and the booster reel can be seen above the ground ladders. Meanwhile, Truck 34 was photographed during a fire prevention week parade, highlighting the iconic design of the Ward LaFrance Ambassador cab paired with the Grove aerial. Truck 21’s unit was later reassigned to Truck 39, and Truck 7’s unit eventually went to Truck 61. The photos of these later assignments show how the equipment evolved over time. For instance, Truck 39 received the unit that once served as Truck 21, and the booster reel had already been removed before it was re-assigned. Similarly, Truck 61 took over the former Truck 7 unit, continuing the legacy of these historic apparatuses. These vehicles not only represent the technological advancements of their time but also serve as important pieces of Chicago’s firefighting history.
