Yanzhou Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. has successfully obtained a national invention patent for its desulfurization waste liquid processing technology. This breakthrough marks a major milestone in the domestic coking industry, filling a critical technological gap and offering a practical solution to long-standing issues in the HPF process. The technology plays a vital role in addressing the pollution caused by desulfurization waste liquid and promoting clean production practices.
Desulfurization waste liquid generated during the operation of coke oven gas desulfurization systems is a highly complex mixture that cannot be directly treated like other industrial wastewater. Unlike conventional methods, it is typically either disposed of in coal yards or mixed with coking coal for simple treatment, or even evaporated. However, these approaches come with significant drawbacks, limiting the long-term stability of coking operations and hindering sustainable development.
To address these challenges and ensure the long-term sustainability of the enterprise, the Handan Coking Plant initiated a project based on chemical treatment methods aimed at neutralizing harmful components in the waste liquid. This initiative was supported by technical teams who collected and analyzed data from both domestic and international sources. The proposed decomposition method was quickly integrated into the technological development plan of Shaoguan Steel.
With the company’s support, the coking plant and the technical center collaborated with a domestic research institution to conduct laboratory feasibility tests. Through repeated trials and persistent problem-solving efforts, the project eventually succeeded.
The application of this innovative technology has brought substantial economic and social benefits. First, it can process 10 tons of desulfurization waste liquid daily, reducing the COD level from 160,000 mg/L to 10,000 mg/L, making it suitable for biological dephenolization. Second, after further treatment through ammonia distillation and de cyanation, the water meets second-grade industrial standards and can be reused as quenching water, significantly reducing water consumption. Third, the solid thiocyanate produced through this chemical process achieves high purity, meeting national standards and offering strong market potential. Finally, the entire issue of waste liquid discharge and environmental pollution has been resolved, enabling true clean production within the original desulfurization process.
