Long Grove lightning strike 4-3-11
Last night, as thunderstorms swept through the northwest suburbs, the Long Grove Fire Department received emergency calls about a lightning strike at a residence on Stayton Lane. Surprisingly, the homeowners were unaware that their house had been hit until concerned neighbors alerted them and urged them to evacuate. By the time the fire department arrived, flames were already visible near the roof peak, where the lightning had caused significant damage, creating several openings in the structure. Thanks to swift action by the firefighters, the blaze was quickly contained, though crews stayed on-site longer to ensure the integrity of the roof wasn’t compromised.
One challenge faced early on was the narrow, tree-lined driveway leading to the home. The first truck dispatched couldn't access the property due to its size, prompting the call for a smaller quint truck that could navigate the tight space. Persistent heavy rain and frequent lightning strikes complicated firefighting efforts, delaying attempts to position firefighters at the top of the ladder.
This area lacks fire hydrants, requiring the deployment of three tankers during the initial response. The Palatine Rural Fire Department contributed by refilling Long Grove’s tanker before leaving the scene. Photographer Larry Shapiro was present and captured several images of the aftermath, including evidence of the lightning strike along the gutters and roofline.
A gallery of additional photos taken by Shapiro can be viewed [here]. Among these images, one shows Long Grove Tanker 55 supplying water to Squad 55, highlighting the logistical challenges posed by the absence of nearby hydrants. Another image reveals clear signs of the lightning strike, with damage evident along the roofline. Additionally, there’s a shot of Buffalo Grove Quint 27 maneuvering into position after repositioning the vehicles to gain better access.
Further images highlight the extent of the damage, showing how the lightning strike not only affected the roof but also blew out a transformer and an adjacent unit inside the garage. These photographs provide a stark reminder of the destructive power of lightning and the importance of rapid emergency response.
In the end, thanks to coordinated efforts from multiple departments and the dedication of the firefighters, the situation was managed effectively, preventing further damage or injury.
