Long Grove lightning strike 4-3-11

Last night, as thunderclouds swept through the northwest suburbs, the Long Grove Fire Department received emergency calls about a lightning strike and fire at a residence on Stayton Lane. Surprisingly, the homeowners were unaware they had been struck until a concerned neighbor urgently knocked on their door, warning them to evacuate immediately. By the time the first responders arrived, flames were already visible near the roof peak where the lightning had hit, creating several openings in the structure. Although the fire was swiftly contained, firefighters stayed on-site longer to ensure the roof was thoroughly inspected for any hidden dangers. Accessing the scene proved challenging due to the narrow, tree-lined one-lane street. The first engine responding couldn’t maneuver its way to the end of the driveway, prompting the call for a smaller quint to handle the tight space. Persistent heavy rain and frequent lightning strikes hampered efforts to position firefighters at the top of the ladder, delaying operations multiple times. Since the area lacks fire hydrants, three tankers were dispatched initially. The Palatine Rural Fire Department’s Tanker 36 assisted by refilling Long Grove’s Tanker 55 before being cleared from the scene. Photographer Larry Shapiro was present and captured several compelling images, which you can view in a full gallery HERE. One of the striking visuals shows Tanker 55 supplying water to Squad 55, highlighting the logistical challenges faced in areas without direct access to hydrants. Another captures clear evidence of the lightning strike along the gutter line and roof, underscoring the power of the electrical discharge. Additional photos reveal the extent of the damage to the roof, transformers, and adjacent structures, including a blown-out transformer inside the garage. In one particularly poignant image, a Buffalo Grove firefighter is seen examining the roof peak where the lightning struck, checking for potential extensions of the fire. This moment encapsulates the meticulous work firefighters undertake even after the immediate threat has passed. As the cleanup and repairs continue, it’s a reminder of both the destructive force of nature and the dedication of those who protect our communities.
