Internet of Things: Security functions do better but far from being very secure

[Upstream and downstream of China's instrumentation network industry] Nowadays, connected devices are quite common in the world and they are becoming more and more popular. In the past, typical networking products were computers, tablets, and smart phones. These products are now replaced by affordable sensors and chips, and basically everything is connected. Appliances are also gradually becoming networked to introduce a wide variety of new features.

There are also some sensors on the market that do not have Internet of Things functionality. The debate over the Internet of Things is the same as the controversy over all connected devices. It is about privacy and security. Most people do not want others to obtain their own data by connecting devices in their own homes or offices.

The biggest concern for consumers' concerns is that some connected products, such as cars or refrigerators, may become security holes that allow criminals to enter your network. These criminals may expose your personal data by entering devices in your network, such as computers with personal information.

There are many ways to make the Internet of Things safer. The most important thing is to put some kind of firewall or security measures in the chip and put additional sensors on the device. The refrigerator can tell the owner that it needs a meeting today, which sounds very convenient. But I don’t think anyone would be willing to turn the refrigerator into a huge security hole in their own network because they are too lazy to open the calendar in their mobile phones.

The connection between the fluent IoT sensors, devices, and your network will be encrypted to protect this data, but this may not be enough. At the Las Vegas International Hacking Conference, a Samsung-connected refrigerator was attacked and researchers found that its security features were not enough. In particular, this Samsung RF28HMELBSR smart refrigerator uses SSL (an encrypted communication protocol), but it cannot verify whether the authentication is valid. In this way, hackers can become man-in-the-middle attacks to steal data.

With this Internet-enabled refrigerator, users can easily know their Google calendar and other things. However, such hackers may steal the user's password and security token through the refrigerator, and then steal another more useful goal: the user's Gmail account, the hackers move their fingers, they may steal a lot of personal and business information.

In the coming years, IoT products companies must pay more attention to the security of products. It may sound trivial to have a refrigerator hacked, but if you expose your e-mail account and expose a tax return, your personal information may be stolen, which may eventually lead to disaster.

Manufacturers of IoT products need to regard every product as an access point that is likely to be invaded and build robust security features. In addition, these features must be extensively tested before the product is placed on the market, rather than tested after the product has been placed. We can't stop the bud of the Internet of Things. All we want is for manufacturers to seriously think about security issues because these products, like cars and refrigerators, could become the door for burglars to enter your home network. If manufacturers only manufacture chips and devices that support the Internet of Things without considering any security issues, customers may not purchase networking products because they consider security issues. IoT products that can guarantee security are a good thing. However, if there is no Internet of Things product that strictly implements security functions, it may cause accidents.

The Federal Trade Commission has been trying its best to promote IoT product manufacturers to pay more attention to security issues. As consumers, as more and more IoT devices become mainstream, we need to ask manufacturers for more security responsibilities. However, early adopters of the Internet of Things product have opened this loophole - but this is our own choice. For those consumers who are still taking a wait-and-see attitude, it is better to wait until most of the IoT products are mature before they choose to purchase.
