“Global Geodetic Benchmark Dynamic Correction and Service” project passed the acceptance

On October 10, 2018, the "Global Geodetic Benchmark Dynamic Correction and Service" project under the National 863 Program in Earth observation and navigation technology successfully passed its acceptance inspection, organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology. This milestone marks a significant advancement in China's capabilities in geospatial science and high-precision positioning. The project focused on developing a dynamic global geocentric coordinate reference frame, aiming to improve the accuracy and reliability of geodetic benchmarks through advanced GPS technology. It involved research into non-autonomous parameter determination, multi-technology integration, and regional static benchmarking. The team developed various models, including a three-dimensional variation inversion model of the Earth's center, combined with seafloor pressure and GNSS monitoring, as well as land site distribution equilibrium evaluation and global plate motion models. These models addressed key challenges such as dynamic reference system parameter determination, data fusion from multiple sources, refinement of the global coordinate frame, and the maintenance of both linear and nonlinear dynamic benchmarks. As part of the project, software prototypes were created for framework fusion processing and distributed data management of the geocentric reference system. This achievement has enabled China to establish an independent theory and methodology system for building and maintaining a global dynamic framework. Many of the technical approaches have reached world-class standards, with results comparable to international counterparts. These innovations support national economic development, defense needs, and the modernization of surveying and mapping industries, especially in providing high-precision dynamic benchmarks. The project also plays a crucial role in supporting the Beidou satellite navigation system, offering a unified benchmark framework for the implementation of the "Belt and Road" initiative. Its outcomes are expected to boost the growth of Beidou-related industries and open up wide-ranging applications across various sectors. Some of the results have already been applied in national and provincial benchmark systems, major infrastructure projects, and local surveying efforts.
