Improve the effect of foliar fertilizer spraying

Foliar fertilizer plays a crucial role in supplementing soil fertilization, preventing early plant decline, and maintaining a balanced nutrient supply for crops. When used correctly, it not only boosts plant resilience but also enhances both the quality and yield of agricultural produce. To maximize the effectiveness of foliar fertilizers, several key factors should be considered during application.

First, it is essential to select high-quality foliar fertilizers. When purchasing, check that the packaging includes all necessary information such as the trademark, enterprise standard number, product certification, agricultural registration certificate, plant name, origin, and production date. Ensure the packaging is intact and, for liquid fertilizers, verify that the solution is clear with no sedimentation. This helps ensure the product is safe and effective for use.

Second, foliar fertilizer application should be targeted based on crop needs. If the base fertilizer is insufficient, foliar sprays rich in nitrogen and phosphorus are suitable. When sufficient basal fertilizer is already applied, trace element-based foliar fertilizers can be more beneficial. For example, applying boron during the budding stage can help prevent flower drop and improve fiber length in crops like cotton. Zinc application in rice and corn can reduce the occurrence of seedling blight, while molybdenum-based sprays in acidic soils can enhance oil and protein content in peanuts and soybeans. Additionally, using brassinosteroids can accelerate vegetable maturity, lower cellulose levels, and improve flavor and sweetness.

Third, the concentration of foliar fertilizer must be carefully controlled. Over-concentration, especially with growth regulators, can harm plants rather than help them. For instance, triacontanol at 0.5–1 ml per liter promotes germination, but concentrations above 1 ml/l may inhibit it. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid overuse or underuse.

Fourth, timing and location of spraying are important for optimal absorption. The best time to apply foliar fertilizer is early morning or late evening when wind is minimal, reducing evaporation and increasing leaf uptake. If heavy rain occurs within 24 hours after spraying, reapplication is necessary. For small areas, spraying the underside of leaves is more efficient, as this part absorbs nutrients faster than the upper surface.
