Dalian opened China's flat shipbuilding river
Dalian Shipbuilding Heavy Industry successfully launched its 400-foot jack-up drilling rig, "Ocean Oil 942," designed for Chinese oil companies. This milestone marked the end of China's long-standing inability to construct large vessels on flatbeds. The construction of the "Ocean Oil 942" not only achieved the highest standards in its series but also demonstrated technical capabilities comparable to those of top shipyards in South Korea and Singapore.
One of the most critical challenges in flatbed shipbuilding is the sewerage system, which plays a vital role in stability and safety. Due to site constraints, the platform was built more than 40 meters away from the launching area. Before the launch, it was kept horizontal and safely towed to the designated location. The launching plan had to be carefully designed to ensure a smooth transition into the water.
During the towing process, the team faced numerous obstacles, including long slide laying, heavy workload, limited personnel, uneven ground conditions, and difficulties in adjusting the angle and positioning of the slides. To address these issues, an expert group was assembled to conduct a comprehensive review of the launching plan, ensuring it aligned with the development of the "Economic Engineering Construction Base." As a result, the most advanced international launching method was adopted.
The "Ocean Oil 942" is significantly heavier and larger than traditional ships, making the launching process particularly challenging. In addition to tidal influences, the operation had to be carried out at night to minimize risks. Based on the rig’s weight, volume, and the buoyancy of the water, the expert team developed a detailed launching plan that effectively addressed all challenges.
Throughout the entire process, the team ensured smooth and controlled movement of the platform. Compared to foreign methods, this approach not only improved efficiency but also reduced both time and cost. The successful launch of the "Ocean Oil 942" represents a major achievement in China's shipbuilding industry and highlights the country's growing technological prowess in offshore engineering.
