The first batch of units of Xiaowutai Wind Farm Project in Youyu County was successfully installed.
On November 3, the Xiaowutai Wind Power Project in Youyu County delivered promising news. Two massive wind turbines, standing 68 meters tall with a rotor diameter of 64 meters, were successfully installed in one go. This achievement marked a significant breakthrough in wind power generation within Shanxi Province, showcasing the region's growing potential in renewable energy.
Located in Youyu County on the Jinbei Plateau, the Xiaowutai Wind Farm sits at an elevation of over 1,600 meters above sea level. It is the only passage through which cold air from Siberia flows from northwest to southeast. The area’s low and open terrain makes it a rare and ideal valley for wind energy development, offering excellent wind conditions and abundant wind resources.
Once fully operational, the project will supply 69.5 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity to the grid annually. This is equivalent to saving 24,700 tons of standard coal each year. The environmental benefits are substantial: it could reduce dust emissions by 240,000 tons, cut carbon dioxide by 12,400 tons, sulfur dioxide by 42,000 tons, and nitrogen oxides by 102,400 tons. These reductions play a crucial role in improving air quality and supporting sustainable economic growth.
As a key investment attraction project for the county, the Xiaowutai Wind Power Project was developed by Shanxi International Power Group Co., Ltd. with an investment of nearly 400 million yuan. Construction began in May 2006, and the project is expected to be completed and start operations in July 2008. Once finished, there will be 33 wind turbines with a total capacity of 41.25 megawatts. The 91.5-meter-tall turbines will be the tallest in Asia.
Currently, the project is in its most intense phase of construction. The substation has been completed to about 80%, while the installation of turbine positions is 20% complete. All workers are working around the clock, putting in extra hours to meet the tight schedule and ensure the project’s success.
