Building fire in Robbins 9-19-12

It was around 11 p.m. on September 19, 2012, when the Robbins Fire Department received a call about a structure fire at a vacant house located at 137th Street and Monticello Avenue. Alongside Robbins, several neighboring departments were dispatched to assist, including Garden Homes FPD, Markham FD, Blue Island FD, and Dixmoor FD, all of whom sent their engines. When Robbins Engine 2913 and Tower 2914 arrived on scene, they found smoke billowing from what appeared to be an ordinary two-flat building undergoing renovations. The primary fire was located in the rear of the first floor, with significant extension into the second floor. Command quickly called for a Full Still off Box #2909, bringing in additional support from Midlothian FD with a squad unit and Palos Heights FPD with an ambulance. After approximately one and a half hours of intense firefighting efforts, the flames were finally brought under control. The corrected address for this incident was confirmed to be 3617 South Monticello Avenue. As I arrived on the scene shortly after the initial response, I noticed that firefighters already had water on the fire, indicating swift action by the responding units. Smoke continued to pour out from the roofline, signaling the ongoing efforts to extinguish the blaze both inside and above the building. The Robbins tower ladder was positioned skillfully on the "B" side of the structure, allowing firefighters to access the roof and tackle fires in the soffits effectively. Inside, crews worked diligently to suppress the flames, ensuring that no hidden pockets of fire remained. Progress was evident as teams advanced through the second floor, steadily reducing the intensity of the fire. Meanwhile, outside, firefighters stood ready with lines, prepared to provide backup or adjust their tactics as needed. A Markham firefighter could be seen standing by with a hose, offering assistance where necessary. Photographs captured the intensity of the situation, showing firefighters working from the basket of the Robbins tower ladder, searching for fire within the roof's soffits. Another image highlighted the venting of fire along the roofline, an essential step in managing the blaze. Further images depicted Robbins firefighters conducting overhaul operations along the exterior of the roof, ensuring all remaining embers were extinguished. The collaborative effort between multiple departments was crucial in containing the fire efficiently. Garden Homes firefighters were also present, providing additional manpower and resources. The Robbins engine was strategically placed across the street from the burning building, ensuring a reliable water supply throughout the operation. Overall, the teamwork displayed by all involved departments was commendable, reflecting their dedication to public safety and efficient firefighting practices.
