Surveying Old Workings in a Mine with the Elios 3

Surveying Old Workings in a Mine with the Elios 3

Key Benefits at a Glance

Safety

The Elios 3 helps operators identify risks like subsidence, unintended access, and hazardous gases, making underground environments safer for workers.

Efficiency

In just 15 hours of flight, the Elios 3 collected valuable data, providing a clear picture of the condition of old mine workings.

Accuracy

Using the Elios 3, the team gained precise insights into the state of old workings, helping determine what, if any, repairs or actions were needed.

Access

The Elios 3 only needs 60x60 cm of space to operate, compared to the previous system that required 9x9 feet. This makes it ideal for tight spaces.

Mines around the world vary in size, material, and age. As they grow older, managing them becomes more complex. Some of the oldest mines date back to the 1800s. Today, as mining operations continue, knowing where old tunnels are and their condition is essential for safety and efficiency. Monitoring and potentially sealing these areas is crucial for modern mining operations.

What Are the Risks of Old Workings in Mines?

Old mine workings can be dangerous, whether they're part of an abandoned site or an active operation. They might contain unstable structures, hidden equipment, or harmful gases and water. Without accurate records, these areas can pose serious risks. If new excavations accidentally enter an old tunnel, it could lead to accidents or delays.

Operators typically aim to prevent subsidence, manage hazardous substances, and ensure all materials inside are intentional and secure. But without accurate data, this can be difficult.

Using Drone Surveys in a Mine

The Empire State Mine, owned by Titan Mining in upstate New York, is a large base metal mine producing high-quality zinc ore. With operations dating back to the 1920s, some infrastructure has been in use for decades. The mine’s shaft descends 2,300 feet at a 40-degree angle.

Kirk Farrell, a technical services manager at Titan Mining, has been using the Elios 3 to map 1930s-era old workings. The drone replaced a previous system that required 9x9 feet of space. With its compact size of 50x50 cm, the Elios 3 was perfect for tight tunnels and provided detailed mapping without GPS.

Mapping Old Workings Around a Shaft

Titan Mining wanted a complete visualization of the shaft and its connecting tunnels to update their records and compare them with surface activity. While 2D maps existed, there was no single source of truth. Kirk and his team used the Elios 3 to map the entire inactive area. Some tunnels were only 1.2 meters wide, which would have been impossible for the old system. The Elios 3 made it safe and efficient, allowing inspectors to avoid entering small, dangerous spaces.

By combining visual and LiDAR data, Kirk's team found that the tunnels had minimal degradation, showing the strength of the rock over nearly a century. This project unlocked new knowledge and proved the Elios 3's value for future exploration.

Results of an Underground Mine Survey with a Drone

With just 15 hours of flight time, Kirk and his team created a full 3D model of both underground and aboveground areas. The data revealed previously unknown details about the mine's layout.

“The drone is a game-changer for underground mining. No one was put at risk, and we’ve gathered more detail than ever before,” said Kirk Farrell, Technical Services Manager at Empire State Mines. The Elios 3 also helped uncover historical workings, aiding in planning for future operations. It not only improved safety but also set a new standard for efficient and accurate mine surveys.
