Building fire in Robbins 9-19-12

**From Dennis McGuire, Jr.:** At approximately 11 PM on September 19, 2012, the Robbins Fire Department received a call for a reported structure fire at a vacant house located at 137th Street and Monticello Avenue. Alongside Robbins, assistance came from the Garden Homes Fire Protection District, Markham Fire Department, Blue Island Fire Department, and Dixmoor Fire Department, all of whom dispatched engines to the scene. When Robbins Engine 2913 and Tower 2914 arrived, they found thick smoke billowing from a two-flat, vacant building that was undergoing renovations. The primary fire was discovered on the first floor in the rear of the building, with significant extension into the second floor. Command quickly requested a Full Still off Box #2909, which brought Midlothian Fire Department with a squad, and Palos Heights Fire Protection District with an ambulance to provide additional support. It took about an hour and a half to bring the fire under control. The corrected address for the incident was 3617 South Monticello Avenue. --- As I arrived, crews already had water on the fire, and smoke was visibly pushing from the roofline. Firefighters worked diligently to contain the flames, with some climbing the Robbins tower ladder to access the soffit and roof areas where fire was still burning. The intensity of the fire could be seen as it vented along the roofline, creating a dramatic scene. Progress was steady, and within the next hour, firefighters made significant headway on the second floor. A Markham firefighter stood by with a hose line, ready to assist as needed, while Garden Homes firefighters also maintained a watchful presence. The Robbins engine was positioned across the street from the burning building, strategically placed to supply water to the operation. Once the interior fire was mostly extinguished, the focus shifted to overhaul operations. Robbins firefighters meticulously examined the exterior of the roof, ensuring no remaining hotspots posed a threat. The Robbins tower ladder was set up on the 'B' side of the building, allowing firefighters to reach higher points and continue their efforts to fully extinguish any lingering embers. It was clear that teamwork and coordination among multiple departments played a crucial role in managing this challenging situation. This event highlighted the dedication and skill of the firefighters involved, who worked tirelessly through the night to protect both the property and surrounding area.
