New Engine for Elwood FPD
The Elwood Fire Protection District in Illinois recently welcomed a brand-new industrial foam pumper from Sutphen, equipped with a National Foam system. This impressive vehicle is designed to handle large-scale industrial firefighting operations with precision and efficiency.
The custom-built pumper features an extended wheelbase measuring 256 inches, offering excellent stability and maneuverability. With a travel height of 11 feet 11 inches and a total length of 37 feet 6 inches, this rig is both powerful and agile. The Sutphen chassis stands tall at 73 inches, complete with a raised roof that adds extra space inside the cab. Designed to seat four personnel comfortably, the cab includes two EMS cabinets to accommodate all necessary medical equipment.
Under the hood lies a Detroit Diesel S60 engine delivering 515 horsepower, paired with a robust Allison GEN IV EVS transmission. The pump system, supplied by Hale, boasts an impressive 8FG model capable of pumping up to 300 gallons per minute (GPM). The vehicle is outfitted with multiple discharge points, including three 5-inch outlets on the left side, one on the right, along with smaller 3-inch and 2 ½-inch outlets strategically placed around the body. A high-flow 8-inch deck gun is also included, capable of discharging up to 5,300 GPM when needed.
Storage capacity includes a 750-gallon water tank and a separate 300-gallon foam tank, ensuring ample resources for prolonged operations. The foam system uses the advanced National Foam Servo Command 300 technology, allowing firefighters to apply foam with precision and control. The Sutphen body design provides ample storage space, with 234 cubic feet available across its compartments. Additional safety features include a duo-safety pumper ladder compliment and rear chute ladder storage.
Optional equipment enhances the pumper’s versatility, such as a Harrison 20-watt generator, a Safety Vision camera system, and a Command Light 8,000-watt light tower for nighttime operations. The top-mounted pump panel and industrial foam monitor are positioned for easy access and operation, while detailed drawings provided by Sutphen offer a clear visual representation of the vehicle's specifications.
This state-of-the-art industrial pumper represents a significant upgrade for the Elwood FPD, providing them with the tools they need to tackle complex industrial fires with confidence. The combination of cutting-edge technology and thoughtful design ensures that this vehicle will serve the community effectively for years to come.
