Yuchai and Cummings stage a double male society


With the development of China's passenger car market and the upgrading of passenger cars, the competition for passenger car engines has become increasingly fierce. A survey conducted by the reporter at the 2007 World Bus Expo Asia Exhibition showed that the advantages of Yuchai and Cummins are obvious.

During the 2007 World Bus Expo Asia Exhibition, the reporter conducted an investigation on the engines used by the 68 exhibitors of 15 participating bus companies. The results show that at present, there is a diversified situation in the selection of power for mainstream passenger car brands in China – 68 engines use 14 engines for each company. However, for most engine companies, the difficulty of entering the supporting system of mainstream bus companies has greatly increased.

The survey data show that Yuchai and Cummins have obvious advantages in the passenger car market in China. Of the 68 show cars, 35 use the engines of these two brands. Among them, 20 vehicles use Yuchai engines, and 15 vehicles use Cummins or Dongfeng Cummins engines.

For a long time, the main "power" of the domestic medium-to-high-end passenger car market is the series of engines of Cummins and Dongfeng Cummins. Until recently, Yuchai had initiated a challenge to Cummins' main position in the domestic medium and high-end passenger car market and achieved certain results.

Judging from the buses displayed at this year's World Bus Expo Asia Exhibition, the number of Yuchai engines installed exceeds that of Cummins, and the focus of the two branded engines is also significantly different. Among them, the Cummins engine still maintains a certain competitive advantage in passenger cars with a length of 11 meters or more. Of the 15 show cars that use the Cummins engine, 12 have more than 11 meters in length. Of the 20 exhibitors using the Yuchai engine, there are 12 vehicle captains in the range of 7.9 meters to 11 meters.

The two branded engines have fierce competition in the 11-meter to 12-meter passenger car market. Among the 68 exhibitors in the reporter’s statistics, there are 34 display car captains that are distributed between 11 meters and 12 meters (inclusive). Among them, there are 7 vehicles equipped with Yuchai engines and 8 vehicles using Cummins engines. The number of loaded vehicles is comparable. However, the Yutong, Golden Dragon, Golden Brigade and Haeger buses exhibited by the leading company “One-to-Three Dragons” exhibited mainly Cummins and Hino engines in this body length range.

In addition, the reporter also learned from this bus show that Yuchai and Cummins have started “dark battles” in Beijing, and buses using the Yuchai IV engine are already under debugging.

Although Yuchai and Cummins occupy the dominant position in the passenger car engine market, their impact is also the greatest. For example, in the 12-meter passenger car market, there are five brands of engine products such as MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Duff, Hino, and Nissan Diesel competing with each other. Among them, the six show cars that use the Hino P11C series engines are all 12-meter passenger cars, including Yutong and Golden Brig's two leading companies. The engines of Mercedes-Benz and Duff, two European passenger car companies, also appeared on the show cars of Zhongtong and Ankai respectively.

In addition to Yuchai and Cummins, there are several independent engine companies such as Hino, FAW Xichai, and Doosan Daewoo at the World Bus Expo Asia Exhibition. However, compared to Yuchai and Cummins, the development of the bus market by several other engine companies does not seem to be very smooth. The number of passenger cars using the Hino, Weichai, Daewoo, and FAW Xicaba engines in the 68 show cars was 6, 4, 1 and 1, respectively, and the gap between Yuchai and Cummins was quite obvious.

It is worth noting that, although China’s own-brand engine has an advantage in the number of vehicles, the number of self-branded engines on display cars with a length of more than 12 meters is very small. Companies such as Cummins, Scania, and MAN have almost monopolized this market segment. Not only that, with the rapid rise of the domestic BRT market, the technical level and product reliability of the self-owned brand engines are facing more severe challenges. The engine assembly system of the BRT passenger cars participated in this exhibition was almost monopolized by foreign import brands. How to break this situation is a problem that the independent brand engine companies must face.
