3-Alarm fatal fire in Bensenville, 11-19-17 (part 1)
This morning around 6:15 AM, firefighters from the Bensenville Fire Protection District were dispatched to an apartment building on Marshall Road after receiving an automatic fire alarm. As they arrived, they quickly realized the situation was more serious than anticipated when multiple callers reported visible flames coming from a third-floor unit. Police officers on the scene confirmed that the fire had already spread significantly, with visible flames erupting from the windows.
The fire escalated rapidly, spreading from the third-floor unit into the mansard roof and attic. The initial alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm, and as the flames continued to grow, a second alarm was called shortly after. When the fire breached a firewall, it was further upgraded to a third alarm. Firefighters worked swiftly, deploying elevated master streams from Bensenville Truck 107, Leyden Quint 133, and Chicago Squad 7A, alongside several large handlines. Due to the intensity of the fire, firefighters had to pull out of the building to ensure their safety.
Tragically, one resident was initially unaccounted for and was later found deceased during overhaul operations inside the building. The extensive response involved numerous departments including Bensenville, Wood Dale, Itasca, Leyden Township, Chicago, Elk Grove, Rosemont, Schiller Park, Franklin Park, Addison, Broadview, Hillside, Westchester, Mt. Prospect, Roselle, Norwood Park, and York Center.

Excerpts from the Daily Herald report indicate that the fire caused significant damage to an 18-unit apartment building, resulting in the death of one resident and leaving many others displaced. Firefighters responded promptly to the initial alarm but faced a challenging situation as the fire quickly spread throughout the structure.
