9/11 remembrance ceremony – Park Ridge Fire Department

On a solemn Sunday, September 11, 2011, the tenth anniversary of the tragic 9/11 attacks, the Park Ridge Fire and Police Departments held a deeply moving memorial ceremony at Maine West High School, located at the intersection of Dempster and Potter streets. The event was not just a tribute to those lost but also a moment to reflect on the resilience and strength shown by the community in the aftermath of such devastation. The ceremony featured several poignant speeches and the unveiling of a significant artifact—a piece of steel from the World Trade Center, graciously gifted to the city. As part of the procession, the Chicago Highlanders Pipe and Drum Band led a stirring march down Potter Road, accompanied by the combined honor guards from both the police and fire departments. They escorted the steel beam, draped in an American flag, which rested in the bed of Park Ridge Engine 35. The artifact was treated with the utmost respect, symbolizing the sacrifices made on that fateful day. Larry Shapiro, an attendee, captured the essence of the day through his powerful photographs. One image showed members of the honor guard carefully draping the steel beam with an American flag, preparing for the ceremony’s commencement. Another striking photograph depicted the pipe and drum band leading a somber procession, followed closely by the honor guard, a squad car, and the engine acting as a ceremonial caisson. The photos also highlighted the reverence shown by the honor guard as they walked alongside the engine, ensuring the artifact was treated with dignity and respect. Throughout the day, the steel beam remained a focal point, drawing visitors who wished to pay their respects. The honor guard stood vigilantly, allowing attendees to approach and reflect. A 21-gun salute by the Park Ridge VFW Color Guard added to the ceremony's gravity, while a bell-ringing ceremony honored the fallen first responders. The haunting melody of "Taps," performed by a local resident, brought a touching conclusion to this segment of the ceremony. As the event drew to a close, the honor guard conducted a symbolic folding of the American flag that had covered the artifact, marking the end of a deeply emotional yet meaningful day. These images and moments serve as a testament to the enduring spirit of remembrance and unity. For more captivating images from the event, you can view the full gallery here.
