Anti-Ram Barriers

Anti-Ram Barriers In the realm of building security, the design of your perimeter system plays a crucial role. It determines who can enter and exit your property while protecting against potential intruders trying to force their way in. Anti-ram barriers are essential tools for safeguarding your investment from external threats. This article explores various types of active and passive perimeter security you can install around your property to protect it, your employees, and visitors from unauthorized vehicles. What Are Anti-Ram Barriers? The primary purpose of anti-ram vehicle barriers is to protect against vehicle-related threats. They offer two main forms of protection: 1. Crash Tested HVM (Hostile Vehicle Mitigation) These devices are designed to stop any vehicle from entering a secured location at all costs. They can be manual or automated and are traditionally used in Class III or Class IV facilities. Anti-ram barriers protect against ram-raiding, where a driver uses their vehicle to break into a building, causing significant damage and theft. These incidents often occur when buildings are unoccupied but can also happen during the day, endangering people inside. Additionally, accidental collisions due to careless or drunk driving can be prevented with certain anti-vehicle barriers. 2. Perimeter Security Gates & Systems These can be manual or automated and allow access to those with proper access control devices. They act as a visual deterrent and slow down potential intruders. Many cities have pedestrian areas, and to prevent vehicles from accessing these spaces, various barriers such as bollards, trees, or reinforced street furniture can be installed. DOD- and DoS-Certified Anti-Ram Solutions Anti-ram barriers are made to meet requirements set by the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Department of State (DOS). Here's an overview of the certification standards: K-Ratings In the 1980s, the Department of State introduced K-ratings, which assess the stopping power of barriers against a 15,000-pound vehicle traveling at specific speeds. The ratings include K4 (30 mph), K8 (40 mph), and K12 (50 mph). M-Ratings ASTM International later introduced M-ratings, which account for more factors like vehicle weight, speed, and penetration distance. The M30, M40, and M50 ratings correspond to stopping a 15,000-pound vehicle at 30, 40, and 50 mph respectively. Penetration Levels ASTM also established penetration levels (P1-P4), indicating how far a vehicle travels beyond the barrier after impact. For example, an M50-P1 rating means the barrier stops a 15,000-pound vehicle at 50 mph with less than 3.3 feet of penetration. Anti-Ram Barrier Applications Anti-ram barriers are commonly found in public venues such as airports, government buildings, border patrol locations, law enforcement facilities, large retail stores, distribution centers, schools, loading docks, data centers, utilities, and banks. Passive vs Active Anti-Ram Barriers Passive barriers are fixed and do not allow vehicle entry. Examples include berms, walls, fixed bollards, fences, and engineered planters. Active barriers are located at access points and can be operated to permit vehicle passage. Examples include retractable bollards, crash gates, and rotating wedge systems. The Different Anti-Ram Solutions Several anti-ram solutions are available, including: 1. Anti-Ram Bollards These are cylindrical barriers made of steel or reinforced concrete, installed in deep concrete footings. They allow pedestrian access while preventing vehicle entry. Options include removable and fixed models, with features like anti-rusting capabilities and illumination. 2. Anti-Ram Gates These open and close automatically or manually, allowing controlled vehicle access. Types include cantilever slide gates, vertical lift gates, overhead slide gates, and swing gates. 3. Anti-Ram Fences Designed with cable restraints, these fences provide high-level security. They allow deflection before stopping an intruding vehicle, depending on the threat assessment. 4. Anti-Ram Beams Stronger versions of garage entrance barriers, featuring crash beams, support systems, and anchoring mechanisms.
