Autodesk and Local Motors Collaborate on First Spark 3D Platform Implementation

**Public Company Information:** NASDAQ: ADKS **"The Spark Platform is Set to Accelerate Manufacturing Innovation"** SAN FRANCISCO—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Earlier this year, Autodesk announced its plans to introduce Spark, an innovative open platform for 3D printing. Designed to simplify and enhance the reliability of 3D model printing while offering greater control over the printing process, Spark quickly gained attention as a game-changer in the industry. Now, Autodesk is partnering with Local Motors, a pioneer in open-source hardware innovation, to integrate the Spark platform into Local Motors' ongoing development of the Strati—the world's first 3D-printed car. "The Spark platform is set to revolutionize manufacturing," said Alex Fiechter, Head of Community Management at Local Motors. "It streamlines everything from capturing our ideas more precisely to guiding Design for Additive Manufacturing (DFAM). It also makes creating machine code much easier, enabling us to transition from digital designs to physical parts far more efficiently than ever before." The newly unveiled Strati is being developed by the Local Motors team at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) located at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), one of the nation's premier hubs for additive manufacturing research. The Strati vehicle design was selected from entries submitted by Local Motors’ global co-creation community, and as the project progresses, Local Motors plans to leverage the Spark platform—a move that will mark the first large-scale industrial application of Spark. "Local Motors sees immense potential in the Spark platform for industrial manufacturing projects," noted Samir Hanna, Vice President and General Manager of Autodesk. "This collaboration aligns perfectly with our shared vision of pushing the boundaries of large-format 3D printing to transform the way things are designed and manufactured." To achieve this milestone, ORNL and Cincinnati Incorporated collaborated to develop a BAAM (Big Area Additive Manufacturing) machine, essentially a scaled-up version of a fused deposition modeling (FDM) printer. By outfitting a 6.5' x 13' laser cutter with custom hardware, they created a massive 3D printer capable of producing large-scale components. Spark will play a critical role in connecting the Strati’s digital design data seamlessly to the 3D printer, facilitating smoother visualizations and optimizations during the printing process. According to Local Motors, the Strati simplifies the automotive assembly process by harnessing the power of community contributions, advanced manufacturing tools, and software like Spark. This approach offers numerous advantages, such as reducing the number of parts in a vehicle's Bill of Materials (BOM) from 25,000 to fewer than 50. Additionally, the on-demand nature of 3D printing allows automotive manufacturers to modify or completely redesign aspects of their vehicles with minimal costs or delays in tooling or production timelines. **About Autodesk** Autodesk empowers people to imagine, design, and create a better world.
