Yesterday evening, Chicago firefighters were dispatched to a fire at 525 West Armitage Avenue, just a stone’s throw away from Engine 22's station. When they arrived, they discovered intense flames engulfing the second and third floors of a three-flat apartment building that was currently under renovation. The situation quickly escalated to a 2-11 alarm, calling in additional units to assist. Unfortunately, during the firefighting efforts, the structure suffered a catastrophic collapse.
The Chicago Tribune covered the incident briefly, but I wanted to share some personal observations and photos taken by Tim Olk, who arrived at the scene shortly after the collapse. His images provide a closer look at the aftermath and the heroic efforts of the firefighters involved.
One striking image shows firefighters working diligently from the bucket of Squad 1, using both a hand line and the master stream to battle the flames. Another photograph captures firefighters deploying a hand line from an adjacent rooftop, showcasing their adaptability and resourcefulness in challenging conditions.
In another shot, Engine 22 is positioned in Sector 4 on Mohawk Street, where the fire continues to smolder through the debris pile. This particular angle highlights the extent of the damage and the complexity of the situation.
A few other images focus on firefighters standing by with a hand line in the street, ready to respond as needed. One particularly poignant photo reveals how the front facade of the building, facing Armitage, remained intact while the rest of the structure collapsed behind it.
