Autodesk Declares a ‘New World Order’ in Construction Document Management
Public Company Information:
NASDAQ: ADSK
LAS VEGAS – (BUSINESS WIRE) – At its prominent annual user conference, Autodesk University, Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK), unveiled Autodesk BIM 360 Docs. This innovative, cloud-based service is tailored for the construction sector, providing a centralized virtual workspace where teams can create, access, maintain, annotate, and share both 2D and 3D project documents, blueprints, and models.
According to Autodesk's 2013 industry report, "Making the Grade," up to 25% of construction work involves rework, and roughly 10% of materials go to waste. A significant portion of this inefficiency stems from the cumbersome process of handling hundreds to thousands of project documents. Currently, the construction industry grapples with a complex web of multiple document management solution providers, leading to notable inefficiencies and risks on job sites.
Previously known as Project Alexandria, Autodesk BIM 360 Docs aims to streamline workflows, minimize errors, and save time in construction projects. The platform ensures that every member of the project team works from the most current versions of documents and plans.
"Autodesk is revolutionizing construction management with a comprehensive solution that was long overdue," stated Amar Hanspal, Senior Vice President of Products at Autodesk. "The delays have cost the construction industry too much time and money. Recognizing this challenge, Autodesk leveraged its expertise to deliver a transformative advancement for the industry."
Autodesk BIM 360 Docs fosters collaboration among construction project teams by enabling real-time access to construction documents throughout the project lifecycle. Key planned features include:
• A seamless 2D and 3D experience, allowing users to interact with models in 2D views and visualize them in 3D on the same page, and vice versa;
• Permission-based access control and approval processes to manage updates and releases of documents, ensuring teams always work with the latest information;
• Lightning-fast viewing of large-format PDF design documents, optimized for Apple iOS devices;
• Automated organization of original and updated construction documents into sets, featuring highly accurate and customizable optical character recognition (OCR) of title blocks.
Throughout the development of Autodesk BIM 360 Docs, industry leaders, including designers, general contractors, engineers, and owners/operators, provided feedback and testing.
"Document management has traditionally been a major hurdle for much of the construction industry," said Jason Reece, Technology and Innovation Improvement Lead at Balfour Beatty Construction. "Many still rely on piecemeal solutions that don't truly address the issue. Based on our collaboration with Autodesk during development, BIM 360 Docs appears to be heading in the right direction to offer an integrated technological solution for this age-old problem."

Autodesk is now accepting reservations for a limited release and free preview version of Autodesk BIM 360 Docs at www.bim360.com/docs. The product is expected to launch in early 2016. Alongside the free, limited version of BIM 360 Docs, Autodesk will offer subscription options for additional capabilities tailored to meet the more advanced needs of construction firms. Initially, the product will only be available in English.
