Autodesk Declares a ‘New World Order’ in Construction Document Management
Public Company Information:
NASDAQ: ADSK
LAS VEGAS – (BUSINESS WIRE) – At its annual user conference, Autodesk University, Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK), announced the launch of Autodesk BIM 360 Docs. This cloud-based service aims to revolutionize the construction industry by providing a centralized virtual workspace where teams can efficiently create, review, update, and share both 2D and 3D project documents, blueprints, and models.
According to the 2013 industry report titled "Making the Grade" by Autodesk, up to 25% of construction work involves rework, and roughly 10% of materials go to waste. A significant portion of these inefficiencies stems from the complex and error-prone task of managing a vast number of project documents. Currently, the construction sector grapples with fragmented document management solutions, leading to costly delays and increased risks on job sites.
Previously known as Project Alexandria, Autodesk BIM 360 Docs is designed to address these issues by streamlining workflows and reducing errors across construction projects. The platform ensures that all team members are consistently working with the latest versions of documents and plans.
"A comprehensive solution was long overdue," said Amar Hanspal, Senior Vice President of Products at Autodesk. "The delays have cost the industry dearly in terms of both time and resources. We recognized the need, leveraged our expertise, and are delivering a groundbreaking tool to transform construction management."
Autodesk BIM 360 Docs fosters collaboration among construction project teams by enabling real-time access to essential documents throughout the project's lifecycle. Key features include:
- An interactive 2D/3D experience that allows users to seamlessly switch between 2D views and 3D visualizations within the same interface.
- Permission-based controls and approval workflows to guarantee that only the most recent document versions are used, minimizing outdated information.
- Fast PDF viewing performance tailored specifically for Apple iOS devices.
- Automated organization of original and revised construction documents into organized sets, complete with precise OCR technology for accurately recognizing title blocks.
Throughout the development phase, industry experts from various fields such as design, engineering, and contracting provided valuable feedback to refine the product.
"Traditionally, document management has been a major hurdle for the construction sector," noted Jason Reece, Technology and Innovation Improvement Lead at Balfour Beatty Construction. "Many companies currently use piecemeal solutions that fail to provide a cohesive approach. Based on our collaboration with Autodesk, BIM 360 Docs shows great promise as an integrated technological answer to longstanding challenges in the industry."
Availability:
Autodesk is now accepting reservations for a limited release and free preview version of BIM 360 Docs via www.bim360.com/docs. The full product is anticipated to launch in early 2016. While the initial offering will be free and basic, Autodesk plans to introduce subscription options for enhanced functionalities catering to more sophisticated business requirements. Initially, the service will support English exclusively.
