IBC 2016: Autodesk Flame Family Puts Artists First
Fresh off the heels of its launch in Amsterdam, Autodesk Flame 2017 Extension 1 is now available just in time for IBC 2016. This update brings a wealth of new capabilities to Flame professionals, offering advanced 3D visual effects, compositing, and finishing functionalities that enhance creative workflows.
Among the standout features of this extension is an entirely revamped 3D scene navigation system. Artists can now explore and manipulate 3D environments with greater ease thanks to intuitive controls that mirror those found in Autodesk Maya. These enhancements include improved object selection, scene navigation, and manipulation tools, making it simpler than ever for users to navigate complex 3D scenes. Additionally, the extension introduces a series of collaborative workflow improvements designed to facilitate seamless integration between Flame and third-party 3D animation applications. A new .FBX scene export feature allows Flame artists to seamlessly transfer their projects—including geometries, deformations, textures, animations, and timing—to other software like Maya.
The update also boasts significant improvements in render quality, particularly when working with multi-channel (EXR) render passes. Artists can now enjoy enhanced precision and control over their renders, ensuring they achieve the desired artistic effect with greater accuracy. Color management has been bolstered as well, with new tools and workflows that cater to the needs of finishing artists. For example, batch effects created in Autodesk Lustre can now be rendered in the background reactor, streamlining the post-production process. Moreover, the introduction of a new compass tool within the batch environment provides users with an innovative way to manage and refine their compositions.
In terms of usability, the extension simplifies pipeline integration by supporting multi-channel clips and improving overall color management. The compass tool, showcased prominently in the accompanying image, offers a fresh perspective on how artists can interact with their projects. It’s not just about adding features; it’s about enhancing the artist’s experience. As Marc Stevens, Vice President of Film and Television at Autodesk, explains: "We've made navigating 3D scenes more intuitive for newcomers while providing experienced users with powerful tools to refine their work."
Another key improvement lies in the handling of EXR files, which can now be imported, conformed, cached, and archived as a single clip, maintaining consistency across different stages of production. This change significantly enhances pipeline compositing efficiency. Furthermore, batch setups have become project-independent, storing all necessary metadata so that content can easily be re-imported or transferred between workstations.
For finishing artists, the connected color workflow has been optimized. Tangent ELEMENT panels automatically switch focus to the active application, reducing manual adjustments and increasing productivity. The inclusion of 60 Allegorithmic Substance textures adds another layer of flexibility, allowing artists to experiment with physically-based rendering (PBR) techniques.
Flame Family 2017 Extension 1 will roll out globally via subscription starting October 13, 2016. To learn more about these exciting updates, visit the official page on Autodesk.com.
