Lincoln, a luxury car brand owned by Ford, is considering whether to produce in China because sales in China have soared. Ford announced on Monday that Lincoln’s sales in China in the third quarter nearly tripled to 8,546. Despite the rapid rise in sales, Ford Lincoln's sales still lag behind the more mature German competitors and Cadillac, the US rival General Motors (GM). These opponents are all produced in China to avoid the high tax burden on imported vehicles. Amy Marentic, president of Lincoln China, told Reuters that Lincoln is accelerating its entry into China and plans to increase the number of Lincoln car sales to 65 by the end of 2016. The previous plan was 60 and it is planned to reach 80 by the end of 2017. Mei Yuming said that the company will also set up 5-10 smaller sales branches to penetrate the rapidly growing automobile sales market in China's second and third tier cities. She said the company is still studying the possibility of local production. “I’ve been looking for ways to optimize my business,†Mei said, but declined to elaborate. Ford said that in the first three quarters of this year, Lincoln's sales in China surged by 191% to around 21,000. Even with the surge in sales, Ford Lincoln still lags behind rival GM and its luxury car brand Cadillac, which entered the Chinese market much earlier. Cadillac sales in China increased by 63% to around 12,500 units in September. From January to September 2016, Cadillac sales in China increased by 35% to approximately 77,000 units, which is more than three times that of Lincoln's sales in China. Ford said it hopes that the launch of the new flagship sedan, Lincoln Continental, will boost sales in the Chinese market, which will be launched in China in the fourth quarter.
