Maywood 3-11 alarm fire 8-10-11

This morning, around 9 AM, the Maywood Fire Department received an urgent call regarding a fire at a four-story vacant building being renovated by contractors. Initial reports suggest that an accidental mishap occurred when a torch used by workers ignited materials near the cockloft of one building within a five-building complex. This led to a second alarm request from Maywood companies soon after their arrival, which was later escalated to a third alarm. The structure involved was made of brick with concrete floors, and the fire spread rapidly through the attic space, causing significant damage to the roof before collapsing in certain areas. Firefighters initially attempted to combat the blaze from within the building but had to retreat as the fire gained intensity and control over the roof. Concerns arose when contractors informed the firefighters about the presence of several propane tanks and two Bobcat Skid-Steer loaders inside the building. Maywood dispatched a truck, three engines, and an ambulance to the scene. Mutual aid was provided by neighboring departments including Melrose Park, Westchester, and Forest Park, sending additional trucks; North Riverside and River Grove offered ambulance and engine support; and extra resources came from Broadview, Berkeley, Bellwood, Stone Park, Elmwood Park, Hillside, and River Forest. Among these efforts, the Maywood, Westchester, and Melrose Park trucks utilized master streams, while water supply engines were supplied by Stone Park, River Forest, Bellwood, Berkeley, and two units from Maywood itself. Photographers Larry Shapiro, John Tulipano, and Dan McInerney were present at the fire site and captured numerous images documenting the intense firefighting operations. Despite the challenges posed by the fire’s rapid progression and structural hazards, firefighters managed to contain the blaze to the building of origin, preventing its spread to adjacent structures. As the situation evolved, aerial firefighting techniques became crucial. Images show Maywood firefighters operating hand lines and utilizing the aerial ladder of Truck 502 to access the cockloft area. Additionally, aerial master streams from Maywood and Melrose Park were deployed effectively, providing critical support to extinguish flames on the eastern side of the fire building. By midday, the fire was successfully brought under control, marking the end of the 3-11 incident. The collaborative effort between Maywood and mutual aid departments played a vital role in managing the crisis efficiently.
