New Highly Intuitive, Flexible, Conceptual Design Technologies Unveiled at AIA Conference
Conceptual designs represent the initial phase of problem-solving in design projects, focusing on defining the essential parameters of the initiative. These designs are typically concise in detail, making it easier for stakeholders to grasp the fundamental concept. During this early phase, designers have the opportunity to explore innovative ideas and frequently help establish the feasibility of the project.
In any industry, conceptual designs play a crucial role in communicating a design strategy and gathering initial feedback. To address the needs of architecture, engineering, and construction professionals, Autodesk is introducing two new technologies at AIA 2013 in Denver, Colorado, advancing the development of our Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools for conceptual design.
Autodesk FormIt 4.0:
- Since its launch in November 2012, FormIt, a mobile application available globally, has been downloaded in over 108 countries. The latest version facilitates rapid and fluid model creation and presentations on the iPad, offering a seamless integration with Autodesk Revit.
Dynamo:
- As an open-source, visual programming tool for BIM, Dynamo expands and enhances the capabilities of Autodesk Revit and Vasari for computational design. It provides designers with a flexible platform to create parametric geometry and adjust it through rules and logic. This method enables designers to test numerous concepts swiftly and utilize analysis tools to refine their designs.

FormIt and Dynamo uniquely support a BIM workflow at the very beginning stages of design. Their integration with Revit minimizes inefficiencies between the conceptual and production phases of design by ensuring a seamless workflow and preserving data integrity across applications. This connection to Revit also allows designers to access richer analysis tools and insights from an intelligent building information model earlier in the process, enhancing the conceptual stage's value.
"Our designers use various tools during the early stages of design. Dynamo is an exciting new tool as it lowers the barrier to creating intricate designs within the Revit environment," says Sean Burke, LEED® AP, Associate/Design Technology Manager at NBBJ. "Autodesk's tools streamline the transition from concept to production by enabling designers to work with tools that are deeply integrated."
"The AEC industry has widely adopted BIM for detailed design, documentation, and construction. Conceptual design is now the stage in the design process poised to gain the most from BIM technologies," said Amar Hanspal, Autodesk senior vice president of information modeling products. "The release of FormIt 4.0 and Dynamo reflects Autodesk's commitment to providing intuitive, flexible, and connected BIM-based conceptual design tools that support idea generation across multiple platforms."
By adopting a comprehensive approach to conceptual design, Autodesk software empowers architects to capture ideas anywhere, test them quickly, and integrate them into the broader design process effortlessly. With today's announcement, Autodesk now offers architects support for exploring BIM-based conceptual design across every digital medium—mobile, web, and desktop applications.
