New Highly Intuitive, Flexible, Conceptual Design Technologies Unveiled at AIA Conference

Conceptual designs serve as foundational solutions to design challenges, outlining the essential framework of a project. These designs are typically concise on details, making it easier for key stakeholders to understand the core concept. This early phase encourages designers to experiment with innovative ideas and often helps assess the feasibility of the project. In any industry, conceptual designs play a crucial role in communicating design strategies and gathering initial feedback. To address the conceptual design requirements of professionals in architecture, engineering, and construction, Autodesk is introducing two new technologies at AIA 2013 in Denver, CO, which enhance our Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools for conceptual design. One of these innovations is Autodesk FormIt 4.0, a mobile application available globally. Since its launch in November 2012, it has been downloaded in over 108 countries. The latest version offers rapid, fluid model creation and presentations specifically designed for the iPad. Another advancement is Dynamo, an open-source, visual programming tool for BIM that extends and improves the capabilities of Autodesk Revit and Vasari for computational design. Dynamo provides designers with a versatile platform to easily generate parametric geometry and adjust it using rules and logic. This method enables designers to swiftly test numerous concepts and utilize analysis tools to refine their designs. Their integration with Revit minimizes inefficiencies between the conceptual and production stages by maintaining a seamless workflow and ensuring data consistency across applications. This connection to Revit also allows designers to access advanced analysis tools and insights from an intelligent building information model earlier in the process, adding significant value to the conceptual stage. “Our designers use various tools during the initial design phases. Dynamo is a promising new tool because it makes it easier to create intricate designs within the Revit environment,” says Sean Burke, LEED® AP, Associate/Design Technology Manager at NBBJ. “Autodesk’s tools streamline the transition from concept to production by offering designers tools that are deeply integrated.” “The AEC industry has widely adopted BIM for detailed design, documentation, and construction. Conceptual design is now the phase in the design process that stands to gain the most from BIM technologies,” said Amar Hanspal, Autodesk senior vice president of information modeling products. “The introduction of FormIt 4.0 and Dynamo reflects Autodesk’s dedication to providing intuitive, flexible, and interconnected BIM-based conceptual design tools that support idea generation across multiple platforms.” By adopting a comprehensive approach to conceptual design, Autodesk software enables architects to capture ideas anytime, anywhere, test them quickly, and seamlessly integrate them into the broader design process. With today’s announcement, Autodesk now supports architects in exploring BIM-based conceptual design across all digital mediums—mobile, web, and desktop applications. As we continue to innovate, these tools not only enhance the efficiency of the design process but also empower architects to push creative boundaries while maintaining technical precision. Whether you’re working on a small residential project or a large-scale urban development, Autodesk’s tools provide the flexibility and power needed to bring your vision to life.
