Oshkosh purchases Snozzle

A recent news release at the end of April revealed that Oshkosh, the parent company of well-known brands like Pierce, Medtec, and Frontline Communications, has acquired the Snozzle from Crash Rescue Equipment Services, Inc. You can find the official announcement [here] and another related update [here]. Extracts from these announcements include: > Production of the Snozzle will be transferred to Oshkosh's Fire & Emergency Campus in Wisconsin and gradually integrated over the next six to twelve months. > The SNOZZLE equipment features a piercing nozzle capable of entering an aircraft's passenger cabin, cargo hold, or other compartments to directly apply firefighting agents. Its lightweight, highly flexible extendable turret functions as an elevated water tower, allowing it to pass through doors or over wing exits without risking firefighter safety. Additionally, the patented capability to project a full master stream at ground level enables swift and efficient cooling of burning aircraft tires and overheated brakes. Furthermore, the SNOZZLE can reach below ground level to implement the "seat of the fire" technique when tackling fuel spill fires. > Robert Conley, President of Crash Rescue, expressed pride in Oshkosh acquiring this vital piece of ARFF (Airport Rescue Firefighting) technology. Grady North and Bob Relyea played pivotal roles in establishing the market for this product within the ARFF sector, and they must be delighted to see it continue under a robust owner like Oshkosh. Our decision to sell the Snozzle stems from our need to concentrate our efforts and resources on our core business—remanufacturing. Our recently ISO 9001:2008 certified remanufacturing operation offers comprehensive ARFF vehicle remanufacturing services globally. Our aim is to expand and further focus on this essential service for military, industrial, and commercial clients. Crash Rescue has always been committed to serving its customers, and we’re thrilled to know that the SNOZZLE® will continue to protect lives, property, and ensure firefighter safety. Primarily used by ARFF units, the Snozzle was previously accessible to all manufacturers. Chicago’s Fire Department acquired a 1994 Oshkosh T3000 equipped with a Snozzle for service at O’Hare airport, as seen in Larry Shapiro's photograph. Another example is the E-ONE Titan 8x8 ARFF vehicle deployed at Miami International Airport in 2002, also featuring a Snozzle. Following Oshkosh’s acquisition, the Snozzle will now only be available to Oshkosh’s subsidiary companies. Similarly, in 2010, Chicago placed an Oshkosh Striker 3000 with a Snozzle at Midway Airport, photographed by Gordon J. Nord, Jr. Over the years since its introduction, some fire departments have adapted the telescoping waterway for structural firefighting by mounting it on custom pumpers. For instance, the Orange Fire Department in California includes a 1994-built Seagrave apparatus equipped with a 50-foot Snozzle, captured in another Larry Shapiro photograph. Another Seagrave engine, built in 2000 for the LaGrange Fire Department in Kentucky, also features a 50-foot Snozzle. This unit comes with a 1,500-GPM pump, 700 gallons of water, and 50 gallons of foam split between a 30-gallon and 20-gallon cell. Additionally, the Marrero-Estelle Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1 in southern Louisiana added a 2008 E-ONE Cyclone II engine with a 65-foot Snozzle to their full E-ONE fleet. The Snozzle’s tip includes dual nozzles and a forward-looking camera, enhancing operational efficiency, as documented by Larry Shapiro. These examples highlight the Snozzle’s versatility and its integration across various firefighting applications, ensuring enhanced capabilities for emergency response teams.
