Still & Box at 12300 S. Michigan Ave. 2-21-2013
This is Dennis McGuire, Jr. reporting live from the scene of a recent fire in Chicago. Earlier today, Engine Co. 62 arrived at a single-story, occupied auto repair shop on Michigan Avenue. Flames were already shooting through the roof when the team first arrived. After gaining entry, the 22nd Battalion quickly requested a Still and Box alarm due to the intensity of the fire. Once the situation was under control, crews focused heavily on overhaul and salvage efforts before the fire was officially declared out.
Here are some photos I took during the incident:

Meanwhile, Dan McInerney provided additional details about the fire. He noted that it occurred in a one-story vacant auto body shop, likely starting as an auto fire inside the garage before spreading to the attic space and the roof. Squad 5 initially responded to the call but was limited by being on a Still unit without an elevated water stream. The 22nd Battalion then upgraded the response to include a Tower Ladder for better access to the flames. Engines 115 and 75 managed to quickly extinguish the fire using their 2.5-inch hoses. Although Tower Ladder 34 and Squad 5 eventually arrived, neither ended up needing to deploy their platforms. Overhaul operations continued afterward, and the Battalion requested Emergency Final Action Orders (EFAO) to notify the city's Building Department about the fire in this vacant structure.

It was definitely a challenging day for our firefighters, but thanks to their quick actions, the damage could have been much worse. Stay safe out there, everyone!
