Chicago Engine 2 ‘Christopher Wheatley’
Chicago celebrated the launch of its latest firefighting asset today as Engine 2, named in honor of Christopher Wheatley, officially began operations this week. The christening took place earlier this morning, marking a significant milestone for the Chicago Fire Department. Among those in attendance were notable figures such as Karl Klotz, Gordon J. Nord, Jr., and Larry Shapiro, who are expected to share numerous photographs capturing the event.
For now, I’ve managed to secure two images provided by Larry Shapiro. The first picture shows the emotional moment when Christopher Wheatley's mother broke a bottle of champagne to ceremonially dedicate the newly operational fireboat. This vessel now proudly serves as Engine 2, embodying both tradition and modern firefighting capabilities.
The second image highlights the impressive presence of Chicago Engine 2 during a demonstration held shortly after the dedication near the iconic Chicago Firefighter Memorial at McCormick Place. The fireboat cut an elegant figure on the water, showcasing its readiness to protect the city’s waterfront.
