Lake County Indiana Snorkel History

This post is from Wayne Stuart for #TBT:

Lake County, Indiana fire departments were once home to a number of Snorkel aerial ladder trucks. The city of Gary operated two Snorkels over the years, but not at the same time. One of them came from South Holland, while the other was part of the ALF fleet. The Griffith fire department’s rig originally came from New Albany, Indiana. Meanwhile, the Mattoon ALF unit also served in St. John and Shelby, Indiana.

Hammond Fire Department was unique in that it ran two Snorkel companies simultaneously—Snorkel 1 and Snorkel 2. Munster, though located in Lake County, falls under Mabas Division 24. The Crown Point fire department acquired its Snorkel from Snohomish County, Washington, where it was purchased as a demo unit.
