Parts suppliers take the lead in starting talent localization

Delphi, the world's leading supplier of automotive components and systems, recently launched a summer internship program in China. The initiative was designed to identify and develop local talent for the Chinese auto industry. Through the Delphi Electronics/Mechanics/Computer Contest, held at four prestigious Chinese universities, 46 students were selected from over 700 participating institutions. These interns were then sent to the Delphi China Science and Technology Research Center and Delphi Electronics Suzhou Co., Ltd., where they participated in a fully funded summer internship. The company emphasized that this move is part of a broader strategy to invest in and cultivate homegrown expertise. As China’s automotive joint ventures increasingly favor multinational automakers, and global 4S dealerships expand across the country, major auto parts suppliers are also expanding their presence by setting up R&D centers and training programs locally. Bosch has committed 50 million euros to establish a state-of-the-art technology center in Wuxi, which will open in 2005 and initially employ 200 engineers, mostly based in China. Similarly, Valeo announced plans to create a global R&D center in Nanjing, focusing on local engineering talent. Delphi’s first R&D center in China, located in Shanghai, received an investment of $50 million. The first phase is expected to be completed by June next year, with the initial team consisting of around 500 engineers, scientists, and technicians. By 2009, the center will have approximately 1,500 staff, most of whom will be local professionals, supporting both domestic and international clients with advanced technical solutions. Delphi has long prioritized local talent development. In June, the Delphi-Tsinghua Research Institute (DTI) and SAE International established the Delphi-Tsinghua Research Institute-International Institute of Automotive Engineers Global Knowledge Center. In July, Delphi also launched its first scholarship and graduate management program at Tongji University in Shanghai. This initiative targets third-year students in automotive-related fields, awarding 10 outstanding individuals each autumn. “We hope to enhance the growth of China’s automotive engineering and procurement talent through investments in education,” said Mr. Battenberg, CEO of Delphi Group, during his visit to China. “This will not only support the development of local talent but also help shape the next generation of automotive leaders.” Chen Jinya, President of Delphi (China), highlighted the importance of China as both a growing market and a source of high-quality talent. “In the future, these top university students will work alongside Delphi’s 17,000 global engineers and scientists to deliver exceptional technical support to customers worldwide,” he said at the launch event.
