Parts suppliers take the lead in starting talent localization

Delphi, the world's leading supplier of automotive components and systems, recently launched a summer internship program in China. The initiative aimed to identify and nurture local talent for the Chinese automotive industry. Through the Delphi Electronics/Mechanics/Computer Contest, held at four prestigious Chinese universities, 46 students were selected from over 700 participating institutions. These interns were then sent to Delphi China Science and Technology Research Center and Delphi Electronics Suzhou Co., Ltd., where they participated in a fully funded summer internship. This move reflects a broader trend among multinational auto parts suppliers, who are increasingly investing in R&D centers and local talent development in China. For instance, the Bosch Group announced a 50 million euro investment in Wuxi to build a state-of-the-art technology center, set to open in 2005. Valeo also plans to establish a global R&D center in Nanjing, focusing on training local engineers. Similarly, Delphi opened its first technology center in China with a $50 million investment, aiming to employ around 500 engineers and technicians in the initial phase, with a long-term goal of having 1,500 staff by 2009. Delphi has long emphasized the importance of developing local talent. In June, the company partnered with Tsinghua University and the SAE International to launch the Delphi-Tsinghua Research Institute-International Institute of Automotive Engineers Global Knowledge Center. Additionally, in July, Delphi introduced its first scholarship and graduate management training program at Tongji University, offering annual awards to top third-year engineering students. “We aim to foster the growth of China’s automotive engineering and procurement talent through our investments in education,” said Mr. Battenberg, CEO of Delphi Group, during his visit to China. “This will not only support the industry but also help shape the next generation of automotive leaders.” Chen Jinya, President of Delphi (China), highlighted the significance of China as both a promising market and a hub of skilled talent. “In the future, these talented students will work alongside Delphi’s 17,000 global engineers to provide exceptional technical support to customers worldwide,” he added.
