Petrochemical industry in Xinjiang competes for "big"

At the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Economic and Trade Work Conference, it was revealed that Xinjiang will significantly accelerate the exploration and development of oil and natural gas resources during the "11th Five-Year Plan" period. The region aims to become the country's largest oil and gas production base and a key energy security corridor. Alongside this, Xinjiang will strive to expand its oil and gas industry chain, focusing on deep processing of downstream products to maximize value. According to the conference, during the 11th Five-Year Plan, Xinjiang plans to achieve double-digit growth in investment, oil and gas equivalents, and crude oil processing volume annually. The region also intends to leverage oil and gas resources from neighboring countries to ensure stable growth in both production and imports. By 2010, the oil and gas equivalent is expected to reach 60 million tons, with the petrochemical industry contributing over 70% of the added value from large-scale industries in the region. In addition, Xinjiang will enhance the depth and breadth of oil and gas resource processing. It will encourage collaboration between local and external enterprises, including social capital, to jointly develop downstream oil and gas processing industries. Key petrochemical bases such as Dushanzi-Keramayi, Urumqi, Nanjiang, and Turpan will be prioritized for development. Focus areas include natural gas-based chemicals like ethylene, aromatics, fertilizers, and methanol, as well as fine chemical products. Major infrastructure projects will include large-scale petroleum refining, ethylene, aromatics, PVC, nitrogen fertilizers, methanol processing, natural gas power generation, civil gas supply, oil and gas pipelines, and coal liquefaction. The chemical sector will also promote calcium carbide-based PVC, radial tires, high-efficiency compound fertilizers, and inorganic salt products. Moreover, Xinjiang will actively advance the construction of five major coal-based industrial zones, including Hami Dananhu, Gudongbei Tashan, Kuqa-Baicheng, Yili, and Fukang. These efforts aim to integrate coal-electricity, coal liquefaction, coal coking, and coal chemical industries, forming a comprehensive and interconnected industrial system. By fully leveraging the economic effects of large-scale petrochemical projects, Xinjiang seeks to quickly establish a modern, large-scale petroleum and petrochemical industrial cluster, solidifying its role as a key chemical and energy hub in western China.
