Site Bite: Replacing the coil in a Liebert® condensing unit

Recently, we were called in for an urgent job at P&W Foundry in Plano, IL, to fabricate a replacement coil for a Liebert® condensing unit. This wasn’t just any job — the unit was powering a production floor that made time-sensitive parts for the U.S. Navy. If the unit went down, it could mean serious delays, so we had to act fast.

We arrived on the same day we received the call and started measuring right away. Since no other equipment was being replaced, it was critical to match the coil’s circuitry, fin density, and piping connections exactly for a direct replacement. The coil itself was large but easily accessible, making the sizing process straightforward.

The coil had some non-standard features, like copper connections extending from the bottom of the headers. We had to ensure the new coil matched these precisely for a smooth field installation. The flanges were also built uniquely, requiring an extra bend to each plate flange to give the slab coil more stability on its four supporting pillars.

With detailed sketches and notes, we customized the coil to fit perfectly. The customer had a tight 5-day production schedule, and the installation went smoothly. By the end of the week, they were back online and impressed with how well the new coil performed.
